Pear Salad

And no I don't mean a fancy pear and pecan salad or any other fancy, foodie-type salad with pears.  I'm talking about the pear salad we had in the lunch room growing up in a Walker County, Alabama elementary school.  The one my father-in-law still has with his dinner sometimes.  Here it is:

I had to borrow that photo from FarmHouse Style because I know of only one person who eats eat regularly, and therefore only one person who prepares it regularly so I didn't have a chance to take a photo of it.  I never took to it but usually ate it when it was on my plate in the cafeteria.

It is literally half of a canned pear, a dollop of mayo in the middle then sprinkled with shredded cheddar cheese.  This photo makes it look way fancier because of the lettuce leaf and the cherry.  Has any non-Southerner heard of this salad?  Anybody love it?  Hate it?  Let me know what you think in the comments.

I am a Southerner and have never heard of this. Mayo? on a pear? Um. No.

Oh man, I love pear salad. I haven't had any in years and years though, not since my grandmother passed away. I think I'll have to make me some.

We used to have these in school all the time. I don't care for them too much, but my husband and my nephews love them. I'm always accused of eating all the maraschino cherries!

I saw your blog introduction on Alabama Bloggers...my mom used to make pear salad as a side for dinner growing up, but our pear salad was just a pear, mayo, & cheese...my whole family loved it!

Never heard of Pear salad but then again I am a Yank. I was reading some of your other posts and wish I could hear how you say some of these southern terms just so I know how they are pronounced.

Had it many times - at home and school. I never took to mayo, though (gasp!). My granny would fancy it up with cottage cheese instead of mayo (she never took to mayo either, my mom blames her).

I've been around it all of my life...but only eaten it twice. Once as a child...once as an adult and swore both times to NEVER do it again lol It's a southern thing but not all southerners like it lol

I guess I am a true Southern girl through & through. I LOVE PEAR SALAD!!! I don't recall ever having this at school. My first recollection is having it at a "dinner on the grounds" at church. I will eat the udated version with cottage cheese instead of mayo anytime I am presented the ingredients at a salad bar, but honestly, prefer the mayo....Hellman's mayo.

Ah yes ... It has been years since I had the um .... Well since I had to eat pear salad. All of my schools served it every Now and then. My mother loves it and used to make it all the time (without the cherry - with the lettus leaf on the bottom) - she loves it! I hated it; this hate mostly due to my dislike of canned pears.

As much as I hated it ... For some strange reason ... Thinking about it now has me contemplating if I should give it a whirl on my own - just to see if it is as horrible as I remember .... Then again perhaps not.
